Self taught pilot & instructor with about 6,000 hours safe airtime since the late 90's, mainly on modified Nova DHV 2/3, 3 and 'comp' wings. I looked at the theory/practices used in paragliding training and decided the resulting accident, injury & deaths rates were unacceptiable! I fly the only PG's in the UK that are also UK registered aircraft, including G-BZJI the worlds first Dual Control Tandem training glider, in addition I'm authorised to issue ICAO radio callsigns to members for use when communicating with ATC, NB the common UK practice of use of illegal 2m radios (which render flights uninsured!) are not permited at our club. Since the 90's in most years about 75% of my students are ex-BHPA 'pilots' seeking RE-training. They typicaly have 40mins to 2hrs 'training', spread over a year or two, and often come to me following having had several accidents as a result of their first 'training'. After training I decided to join the BHPA to see if they truly wished to improve UK standards, but due to their refusal to take ANY effective action to cut accident rates as well as their lack of sanctions on instructors/pilots who breach the ANO, after a couple of years I chose to resign, on moral & legal grounds, rather than to keep funding standards which result in the normal accident rates.
