The Royal society for the prevention of accidents on the UK (Rospa) carried out a survey of sporting injuries a few years ago I don't have the figures in front of me so this is from memory (and will have huge errors as a result)
They looked at injuries per 100,000 participants / year
Hanggliding (there was no paragliding at the time) had only 2000 participants so all injuries were multiplied by 50 Fishing had the most fatalities ( wet / carbon fibre rods and overhead power lines) wearing wadeing wellies in fast flowing streams / rivers, and general stupidity above and beyond the call of duty). Playing rugby was the most dangerous activity with in excess of 380 serious injuries a year. Diplay flying at airshows was the most dangerous flying activity. Parachuting was the safest aviation sport Hanggliding was the next safest aviation sport
all from memory, someone might have the actual figures or be able to correct these.
You are much much more at risk driving to the hill than you are flying from the hill. in the UK we have about 5000 to 6000 fatalities a year on our roads (touch wood here) and less than 1 fatality a year hang/paragliding)
The anecdotal stuff for hang/paragliding goes, At a paragliding competition there are very few competitors who have not had something in plaster. at a hanggliding competition there are very few competitors who have had something in plaster

hehe. i also have sworn statements on my driving. driving safely takes the fun out of it. i've come close to death several times driving, but more times trying to fix my computers and accidentally coming in contact with mains power.
