dear folks,

just stop posting binaries. Newsgroups are not meant to contain 30 megabyte a day. The last one with that grazy guy jumping out a balloon or whatever it may be was a good example. I checked the rec.aviation.hanggliding from 'on the road' with my mobile phone and got disconnected 3 times due to bad line qualitiy.

Newsgroups are there for discussing and not as a picture gallery. THERE IS A NO BINARIES RULE. And this makes absolutely sense. Nobody minds if there are URL's posted to whatever size pictures you hold at that adress. The picture and/or other binary data is always the max of a mouse-click away. The newsgroup will not be less lively without the pictures posted.

Posting binaries here in the newsgroup will

1. motivate a lot of public news-server to go NO-PUPLIC due to the high traffic caused by posted binaries 2. it will make it impossible for 'on the road user' to stay current with their newsgroup and they may stop contributing 3. it will allow spreading viruses much more easily. Not every user who downloads the posts has shielded his computer good enough to avoid catching viruses through pictures and programs. (the worst virus I catched so far was send by e-amail with an attached 'binary' Winword-Document.

so please just stay to the rules and stop posting binaries

best regards - Ernst

I have not been bothered by some people posting pictures to this newsgroup because I didn't even know that they were doing it. I filter my messages do view only those less than 6K. Sorry, but if you want me to read your message then you have to keep it fairly short. I hope that some valid messages are not being reject by the manager of the newsgroup because of ram being taken up by pictures.

Why not? If we don't push the limits we'll never advance!

I desperately hope that you survive this 'push the limits' attitude. A lot did not in aviation.

The guys are at least keeping the post size down to 46 (ish) k Which is the same size as the FAQ. But it's very naughty and you should all be spanked for taking up this defencless bandwidth. Bad boys !

Of the piccies posted so far there have been 200 k of pictures Of the whines against the piccies there have been 428 k of posts So if no-one had complained there would have been 428k less downloading going on.

I do like the NG, we should (Sort of) follow the guidelines and I'm sure that no one (even the yuppies with mobile phones and laptops) minds the occasional exceptional piccie. If you want a dedicated 'punt up loads of piccies' like 'alt.binaries.erotica.oral' or whatever then a new NG is the way to go. I don't believe for a minute that the new NG would survive more than a month before it died of lethargy. However, if the title had 'Paraplunger' or 'Paraglider' or 'Parapoofter' in it I'm sure it would flourish and confound all the critics who don't want piccies in this one. The HG newsgroup would die and we'd all have to look at pictures of paraplungers so that we could discuss the merits of one type of scaffolding tube versus another type of scaffolding tube.

An occasional (once a week) piccie doesn't hurt, every day is sore, more than that and we'll get grief from our sysops.

If you don't have the technology and want to get piccies on the web, Mail them to me and I'll punt up a website for you. no charge, no fee, no hassle (No more than 50 piccies and warn me before you mail them so that I can download them when it's cheap You'll also have to write some BS to link the piccies. I can do the donkey work, it's the thinking that kills me.

Hmmmmm

I fail to see how a discussion group clogged up with 30 mb of P.G photos would be an advancement.

Dear mr Craft, I've seen enough P.G photos to last me a lifetime and I'm afraid that they'll somehow slip through the filters. Please post your photos to a suitable binaries group.

Thank you
