I'm highly interested in buying a GPS device but I've never flown with such stuff. Is there anyone who could give me some advice about that. I've heard a heck of a lot about some brands such as Braüniger, Magellan and others.

Moreover, I was told about some vario with GPS integrated. Are they useful or perhaps it's better to have them as independent devices?

I would appreciate any kind of information about that.

Thanks and happy flights.

I've been using a Garmin GPS coupled to my Brauniger IQ Professional vario, and been happy with that. My Garmin is a GPS 12XL rev 2.02, the only bad thing is that this particular model eats batteries, however, I'm told that a more recent h/w version (identified by software rev. 3.05) has about half the power consumption.

You might also find useful info in the newsgroup sci.geo.satellite-nav

Happy flying!
