I just picked up a Hand Glider at a yard sale in Harlem. It's made of very strong bamboo and slightly yellowed plastic sheeting with some remarkably well preserved duct tape. I'm heading out to the ocean bluffs after dinner tonight to test this thing out. I figure I won't need a helmet flying over water but I'll be sure to keep my machete on board. (Never can be too safe!) If someone could get back to me quickly on this and let me know how fast I should tell the jet ski driver to go in order to get me a nice high flight that would be appreciated. I've got 2000' of number 12 electrical cable I figure I'll lay out for a tow rope.

Wish me luck!

can easily rip it down the middle and knot the pieces together and get a flight that's twice as high! Also remember: The more wind the better because wind makes lift

Seriously, this thread makes me (fondly) remember building my own hang glider in high school. It actually sort of worked, tho it was definitely in the 'don't fly higher than you want to fall' category. We flew the thing off hills of fill dirt at a residential construction site. Now I'm taking lessons and have just purchased Falcon 195, and am having great fun with my first altitude flights, but it's an entirely different sort of thrill from designing, building and flying something yourself. Danny, I can totally understand your comments about having a passion for doing it yourself

Wow, you got a 'Hand Glider' too? I love them things, they fly so far. And you can add weights or bend the wings to make them do stunts too. All mine were styrofoam and plastic, held together with masking tape and glue. But they never lasted very long after a whack or two from 30 feet. Never tried to tow one behind a jet ski before, suppose that would work? if that's your thing...

Sounds cool. <g> Don't forget to strap a couple of lead weights around your ankles to improve the trim
