Vmax, most irrigation pipe companies will have 80psi, white pvc pipe. this comes in 20' lengths and weights less than 100#. SIzes from 2'id to 20'id for most hang gliders, 10'id for small dia packages and 12' dia for large packages.
be sure to solidly cap the front so the glider does not slide out on a sudden stop. if the glider fits loosely then put some kind of 'door' in the back. for ventilation, drill a .5 - 1' hole in the bottom near the front. (with out ventilation, the glider will mildew)

There are two primary types of suppliers to check out. Standard industrial/construction plumbing suppliers (not Home Depot consumer stores) carry a very heavy, smooth PVC in 20 foot lengths, 12 inch diameter. I use this for glider storage, having suspended the tube under the eave of my storage shed. I cap the ends with flexible pvc sheeting, secured with bungee. This works great for storage, but is so heavy that I would not recommend it for glider transport. I think I paid about $200 for one length of pipe, in a major metro area. If you really want a tube for transport, I have seen a nice tube made from 12 inch diameter corrugated irrigation pipe. This stuff is much lighter than the pvc. Get this from the irrigation company suppliers that work with farmers. The fella with this rig used it for storage and transport all the time. He lived in Florida, and I saw it on his truck at Lookout Mountain when he was visiting there. Besides needing to fabricate a workable end cap, you also need to deal with the nature of the currugation. He solved this problem by keeping a bunch of carpet scraps, each about 1 1/2 feet wide and anywhere from 3 to 6 feet long. The glider rode on top of the carpet, so he could slide the glider in and out of the tube without the glider and bag getting hung up on the currugation. Third comment- another tube set-up for transport that I have seen has a bright red nose cone on the front, and three red fins on the back. The tube itself is battleship grey. Looks like the owner as carting a surface to air missile around on his truck. This one has MAJOR head-turning potential. I love it!

Dan and I found a 12 inch diameter PVC pipe at a irrigation supply house. The type of the pipe we used was called 'Hi-head' - designed for 100 psi pressure. The wall thickness looks like it is about 3/16', but we didn't measure it.
We live in a heavily agricultural area so there are a number of those kind of supply houses around.
You might check the yellow pages under irrigation, or call a USDA office.
Some people also use a 10 inch diameter pipe. The 12 inch pipe is plenty big. We also put the pole for the wind sock in there.
Ours is mounted on a trailer rather than on the car, but I would bet it would work either way.
Hope this helps!

I used a 20' length of 12' dia. plastic corrogated DRAINAGE SLUICE pipe that sells for $67.00 in our area (Northern PA) End caps are available for $10.00 each, and are able to solidly attached to the tube. The whole rig weight close to 80 lb. Most building supply yards carry this item up here. Hope this helps.
