What winches r in use out there in the h/g & p/g community? Which ones r any good?
Compare & contrast Koch and Wessels winches.(do u have there address)
Is anyone going to be selling any winch in the next 18 months or so, that would be any use to a new and probably impoverished tow club setting up in the U.K.
I'd very much appreciate your honest comments on the above.
safe flying,

I have used a scooter winch made from a Honda 250 cc Helix for the past 5 years. It works great for PG towing, smooth and inexpensive. I'm pretty sure HG pilots first thought of and developped the scooter winch but I've never seen them tow with one. People have also used automatic 400cc Hondamatic motorcylcles for the same for more power to tow tandem.
You just change the rear wheel to a drum, and place it on a platform (trailer). The drum should hold at least 3000 feet of spectron 12 line 3/64ths of an inch thick for 1250 lbs of break strength. The spectron line costs more but is light so won't arc like the cables and lasts a long time.
Scooter winches are easier to operate in my opinion than the ones you mentionned.
If you put a remote control system on your scooter you can even tow yourself !

Kanaalweg 35 Vriezenveen, Netherlands tel. +31 54 99 65 816 fax +31 55 99 65 816
Although I doubt that this is useful for a 'probably impoverished tow club', since they're far from cheap, but very sophisticated.

Check out the August Hang Gliding magazine for information on the radio-self-controlled static winch designed and built by Jule Lorenzen of Kansas. I've seen it operate, and it is most clever. It uses a Honda (350 I think) motorcycle for power.

I've heard of a guy called Ed Pitman that has done the same in CA?
I myself have never done the remote control transition, but I did buy the equipment to do it, just never took the time. Would think towing myself up would be like paramotoring without the noise.

Our tow club uses a Hydraulic set-up.... engine turns hydraulic punp... pump runs hydraulic motor....thru variable valving unit .... drum runs off hydraulic motor... NEVER a shortage of power.... forward to revrese at the flick of a lever...and monitored motor pressure for various pilot weights and conditions.....
its home made from a tractor .PTO setup
